Last Update: January 29th 2010

It's a new year, and a new world.  VOIP is getting more widespread and reliable, newcomers have proven their reliability, and a few old hats in the hostedpbx world have gone downhill.  The future of business telephony seems to really be taking off in the virtual, internet-based world, something those of us in the industry have been expecting for a long time.  We'll see who takes advantage of the tech.

If you're new to the website, then it's good to see you!  This website is designed to help people trying to find independent information about telephone network technology.  While we're currently under development and adding features and articles, I've started up some regular news posts to keep you appraised of any changes in the hosted PBX world, and you can use the 'reviews' tab along the top to get a summary of who's who in the market right now and how they compare.  There's also a glossary of terms, some basic information about what hosted PBX means and information for those interested in learning more, and anything that isn't provided elsewhere can be inquired about in the forums anytime.  You'll usually get an answer within a day or two.

The phone is an important part of your business, and you can’t afford for it to work poorly or stop working. You wouldn’t be reading this otherwise. And that’s why you need to know that no business should open or expand with Onebox’s PBX service.

A month-long review on Ringcentral. Do they make the grade?

For most businesses, the answer of whether to choose Ringcentral is going to have to be a no. While they have been around for a while and provide a greater range of features than the common hosted PBX solution, a few of their choices have made it impossible for me to advise them as your solution. I’ll give you the quick and dirty reasons first, after which you can peruse my experiences with them if you want more information.

This is an interstersting development. VirtualPBX.com today annouced that they can offer telpephone numbers in over 45 countries that all ring into the same hosted pbx service. They state that there are no additional charges for calls coming in on those numbers, beyond a fixed monthly fee for owning that number.

We went to the sign up page and found this to be a very easy process. Congrats on another valuable addition to the service.

Below is the full press release

Virtual PBX Announces New International Calling Options, Expands Affiliate Program

International Calling Service Provides International Local Numbers, Giving More Choice for Multi-National Customers

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Virtual PBX®, the inventor and leading supplier of hosted PBX services, today introduced international numbers in more than 45 countries and more than 1,500 cities abroad.

“Offering international numbers can be a great asset for engaging overseas customers, but the process of setting them up, especially for smaller firms, can be costly and, frankly, a pain to manage”

Small, growing and established businesses have taken advantage of the cost-effectiveness of Virtual PBX’s hosted PBX services for more than a decade. Now, with international numbers, these companies can add local phone numbers in cities abroad, creating a stronger regional presence and allowing inbound calls to be connected at significantly lower rates.

Dec 14th 2009 - Update.

Another month of interesting activity in the world of hosted phone systems, but more so for the future of the cell phone.

It wasn't Skype that picked up Gizmo, but Google. Now with their acquisition of GrandCentral a few years back giving them Google Voice, they add the engineering talent of Gizmo for a SIp based softphone. On the same day they announced their purchase of Admob out of San Mateo. Rumours are flying that they are looking to the cell phone carriers, not for phone numbers or cell coverage, but for data only plans!. Employees at the Google campus have been spotted with "Google" phones. Perhaps it was an early holiday shopping spree, or Google trying to kick start the economy, most likely it is Google pulling the parts together for a consumer branded data only cell phone, using google voice and the carriers 3G network and the wifi networks. A side note to all you travellers, it seems Google is also sponsoring free wifi through many of our nations airports this season.
